My Civic Life

WHAT IS MY CIVIC LIFE?

The My Civic Life program, funded by The Rapides Foundation and administered through its Community Development Works program, provides Central Louisiana high school students volunteer service opportunities so they will become engaged in their communities and make volunteerism a lifelong habit. My Civic Life is an evidence-based civic engagement and service leadership program for high school students. The program is comprised of three components:

  • High school-based community service clubs led by CDW staff using the Youth Volunteer Corps (YVC) model.

  • Leadership development training for a Youth Advisory Board consisting of youth volunteers from the YVC Clubs.

  • Nonprofit partners who participate in service projects and receive capacity building resources about developing and implementing youth volunteer programs.

  • Through high school YVC Clubs, youth directly engage in volunteer services to meet community needs.

Community Development Works has partnered with 15 high schools in five local school districts to offer service clubs for students to engage in volunteer opportunities. These clubs are led by CDW staff and utilize an evidence-based model developed by Youth Volunteer Corps.

  • The Youth Advisory Board guides the My Civic Life program to ensure that there is a youth input in program development.

To strengthen the program, My Civic Life is guided by a Youth Advisory Board (YAB). The YAB is comprised of students who are heavily involved in their local high school YVC Club. In addition to providing feedback to CDW staff, the members will also receive leadership development training from national experts to take back to their YVC Club.

  • The Youth Volunteer Connection is an online platform to connect youth with volunteer opportunities in their local communities.

The Youth Volunteer Connection is a quick and easy resource to connect youth interested in volunteering with local nonprofits that are offering volunteer opportunities. Potential volunteers can create a profile, select their areas of interest, and see what the volunteer needs are at their local nonprofits. The Youth Volunteer Connection is open to any youth between the ages of 13-18 who is looking to get involved!
